What is the Difference between Divorce and Dissolution of Marriage?
Divorce and dissolution are two options for legally terminating a marriage in Ohio.
Cincinnati divorce attorney John Heilbrun understands the challenges faced by separating spouses and their children. If you’re faced with divorce, please call The Law Office of John Heilbrun at 513-321-3940 to schedule your confidential consultation.
Divorce is a civil legal action filed by one spouse to legally end his or her marriage with the other spouse based on statutory grounds. Dissolution of marriage is a mutual act in which each spouse agrees to terminate the marriage and signs individual separation agreements prior to filing a Petition for Dissolution.
Although the processes for divorce and dissolution are different, they both entail determining issues including:
- Property, asset and debt division
- Child custody and visitation
- Child support
- Spousal support
The fact that dissolution of marriage is approached jointly by separating spouses does not necessarily mean it is easier than divorce. It is still advisable to work with a knowledgeable attorney who can help protect the best interests of you and your children.
