Some married couples eventually desire to live separately but without legally ending their marriages. This may be due to religious beliefs, practical reasons such as healthcare benefits, or because of a variety of personal reasons. Like divorce, legal separation requires the filing of a formal action with the Court that details the grounds on which the separation should be granted; in a legal separation, however, the marriage will remain legally intact at the conclusion of the proceedings.
