How Long Does It Take to Complete a Divorce?
That depends on a number of different factors. If you are referring to an actual divorce case, that means that a Complaint for Divorce has been filed with the Court. This requires that the parties and their attorneys comply with various requirements of the Court concerning the disclosure of income, assets and liabilities, and that the specific procedures implemented by the specific Domestic Relations Courts be followed. In addition, the length of time that it will take to complete the actual formal divorce proceedings will depend, to a great extent, upon the various issues incident to the ending of the marriage that the parties are able to agree upon themselves, as opposed to those issues that will ultimately need to be decided by a Court following a trial. Accordingly, formal divorce proceedings could be terminated as quickly as 2-3 months after the initial filing of the action, or it could take up to 18 months if there are minor children involved and the parties cannot agree on many of the issues incident to the ending of the marriage.
